Windows Phone Mango update is due to be out later this year, but Microsoft has already seeded the beta build to the developers already. If you’re not a developer, just follow the complete step by step guide on how to get the beta build of Windows Phone Mango on your phone, regardless of the phone model you might have.

WP7-Mango

Before we do anything at all, you should be strictly aware of the fact that this will void your warranty, brick your device if you’re really unlucky or lose your data completely in some cases. Here are the things which you’ll be needing to proceed with the Windows Phone 7 Mango update, as RedmondPie points out:

    1. A Windows Phone running NoDo, an update that should have been pushed to your phone a few months ago.
    2. Windows Phone 7 Support Tools, used to upgrade your phone. Get the x64 or x86version, depending on the flavor of Windows you’re running.
    3. Download the updating tool from this post on Windows Phone Hacker. Per request, we’re not hotlinking, but look for the link above the “Notes”.
    4. A beta version of Zune made specifically for Mango, which you can get from here.
    5. A PC running Windows (obviously).

Step 1: Zune software shouldn’t be running on your PC at all before you begin with anything. Extract the updating tool into the root directory of drive C:\, right click on Update.bat and select run as administrator, sit tight and let it do whatever it does.

Step 2: Once everything is done, Zune software will launch automatically on your PC. Search for an update and you’ll get the notification for a “Windows Phone 7 build 7401” update. Install this update, once done you’ll now see the “Windows Phone 7 Mango build 7661” update, install it.

Step 3: At this point when Mango is up and running on your phone, download the beta Zune software from the above given links in order to locate and view your phone.

Restore back to NoDo?

Step 1: Downgrade your beta Zune software to the current version.

Step 2: Run restore.bat as administrator and follow the on-screen instructions for downgrading.
