The Facebook Messenger app was launched a few hours back, but it lacks something which we’re quite sure most of you were expecting: video calling.

Facebook launched the Skype powered video calling feature on Facebook some time back and added a great perk in the plates of Facebook users, allowing everyone to interact with each other in a more “humanly” fashion.

With video calling going mainstream on Facebook, it’s a no-brainer to think that Facebook would eventually roll it out to mobile devices. And just to our excitement, traces of video calling “components” were discovered inside the Facebook Messenger app for the iPhone.

The discovery was made by 9to5Mac and according to them:

The video component would seem to work on both Android and iPhone and would likely tie in with their recently announced Skype desktop video conferencing service as well. The code looks very rudimentary at this point so it isn’t certain that the video can be enabled like the iPad version was with just a few tweeks.

This certainly means one thing; Facebook will eventually bring video calling to the mobile platform at one point in time. But its hard to predict when will that happen. In the coming weeks or maybe months or so, but not any time soon, since the Facebook Messenger app is quite juvenile at this point.

The Facebook Messenger app however raises a few questions on its own, firstly; why did Facebook release a dedicated messaging app while they simply could’ve integrated the messaging feature inside the official Facebook for Android or iOS app itself. Secondly; will the Messenger app and the Facebook app always be two separate apps?

The fragmentation of Facebook apps is somewhat awkward in our opinion, a unified solution for every feature in one place would’ve been a killer idea on Facebook’s end, but it seems that they won’t pursue it any time soon for some reason.

Anyhow, Facebook video calls on iOS and Android would be pretty darn awesome if you’re asking us. Just like how the official Skype app works, we’re quite certain that Facebook video calling would also work on 3G and Wi-Fi both.
